Magento Agency for Open Source and Adobe Commerce

Built for merchants running Magento today who need it stable, patched, and worth keeping.

Why Magento

Magento Open Source fits merchants who want full ownership of their platform, custom-built functionality, no licensing fees, and the freedom to shape the storefront without vendor lock-in. That freedom is real, and so is the responsibility it shifts onto the team running the platform.

Magento Open Source is the free, community-driven edition of the platform Adobe acquired in 2018. It shares a code base with Adobe Commerce, which is why the two are often mentioned together. What sets Open Source apart is what it doesn't include: native B2B tools, commercial support, and managed infrastructure. Those responsibilities shift to the merchant's team or their development partner.

As Magento Open Source specialists, we manage that complexity through:

  • Custom development and extension governance
  • Structured release and deployment processes
  • Scalable architecture built for growth
  • Performance optimization and version upgrade management

Implementation Strategy

Magento problems show up at the systems level, not the feature level. Decisions made early about customization, integration and infrastructure determine whether the platform stays maintainable once it is carrying real volume.

We establish:

  • Customization boundaries and engineering standards
  • Integration sequencing across ERP, PIM, OMS and CRM systems
  • Deployment workflows and release protocols
  • Upgrade paths and dependency mapping

This structure is what keeps a Magento build upgradeable three years later.

Magento Development

Development quality in Magento shows up directly in performance, stability and upgrade cost. Customization written into the platform core is the most expensive decision a Magento team can make because it has to be reconciled at every release.

  • Custom modules and extensions built to Magento coding standards
  • Integration layers designed for real-world sync, not one-time data pushes
  • Structured releases that reduce regression and dependency conflict
  • Backend optimisation across indexing, caching and database performance

The aim is controlled extensibility. You get the business logic you need without buying a store that cannot be upgraded.

Ongoing Growth Enablement

Catalog depth, pricing logic and customer hierarchies all add platform load. On Magento, expansion has to be sequenced deliberately or performance degrades faster than revenue grows.

We guide growth through initiative validation against system load, extension dependency analysis, infrastructure planning, and roadmap alignment with what the platform can actually carry.

Performance & Site Optimization

Magento performance problems are rarely isolated. Treating symptoms without addressing the underlying constraint produces the same slowdown again a quarter later.

We evaluate extension load and code quality, indexing efficiency and database growth, caching and Varnish configuration, and hosting architecture. Most stores we assess can be fixed in place. Replatforming is an expensive way to solve a caching problem.

Two Editions, One Codebase

Adobe acquired Magento in 2018. What was once Magento Commerce is now Adobe Commerce, while Magento Open Source remains free to download and self-host. The two editions share a codebase, which is why their names get used interchangeably and why the distinction is easy to miss until it affects cost, functionality, or support.

Magento Open Source

The full platform with no licence fee. You provide hosting, security patching, and the engineering capacity to keep it current. It suits teams with in-house or agency development capability and straightforward pricing.

Adobe Commerce

Adds the native B2B modules, commercial support, and managed infrastructure. Company accounts, shared catalogs, negotiable quote and requisition lists ship with the platform rather than being built and maintained by you.

The honest version: Open Source has no licence cost but real running costs. Adobe Commerce has a licence cost and fewer things you are responsible for. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how much B2B functionality you need and whether you have the engineering capacity to maintain it.

Inherited Builds

Taking Over a Magento Store Someone Else Built

A large share of our Magento work starts with a store we did not build. Inheriting a build is a different discipline from starting one, and it is not a matter of reading the documentation, because there usually is none.

Before we change anything, we establish what is actually running: which extensions conflict, which patches were applied and which were skipped, what was customised in the core, and what will break at the next upgrade. Then we stabilise, and only then do we improve.

Bring us the repository and an admin login. We will tell you what you have before we tell you what it costs.

Search Visibility

Magento SEO

Magento generates URLs in ways that quietly work against you in search, and the fixes are structural rather than editorial.

Layered navigation creates a URL for every filter combination, which produces large volumes of near-duplicate pages. URL rewrites accumulate as the catalog changes. Multi-store views multiply both. Left alone, Google spends its crawl budget on filter permutations instead of the category and product pages you want ranked.

The platform-specific work is indexation control, URL rewrite hygiene, category and product page optimisation, and protecting organic traffic through upgrades and migrations. That last one matters more than merchants expect,
because a version upgrade handled carelessly can undo years of ranking.

This sits alongside our wider SEO and AI search visibility practice, which is where the strategy, content and measurement live.

Smart Solutions wound up taking over our three Magento websites and helped us untangle the mess left by our first developers. They’ve done a great job of communicating quickly while being honest, and as you deal with more web developers, you’ll find this is actually NOT the norm.

Platform Fit

Where Magento Fits Best

Magento is a strong fit for:

  • Complex or customer-specific pricing that simpler platforms cannot express
  • Deep ERP, PIM, OMS or CRM integration requirements
  • Large or structurally complicated catalogs
  • Multi-store, multi-brand or multi-region operations
  • Business logic that SaaS platforms will not accommodate
  • Internal engineering capacity, or an agency partner providing it

It is a poor fit when your pricing is simple, your catalog is modest and nobody owns the platform internally. We will say so. We are certified across Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce and Shopware and we sell no platform of our own, so we have no reason to talk you into the heaviest option.

We work with B2B distributors and manufacturers and with shooting sports and tactical retailers, where regulated workflows and dealer networks make the integration layer harder than the storefront.

Certified Magento Partner

We have been building commerce sites since 2004 and hold certification across Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce and Shopware. Our Operations Director, Greg Hoole, carries a certification in all three. Certification is a baseline not a differentiator because every agency in this market has a badge. The questions worth asking a Magento partner are how many certified developers will actually touch your build and whether they can show you work in your business model. We encourage you to ask those questions of every agency you shortlist, including us.

Where Your Version Stands

Version support is the part merchants most often get wrong, and it is where the two editions stop being interchangeable.

Release Released Standard Support Ends
Magento 2.4.9 May 2026 May 2029
Magento 2.4.8 April 2025 May 2028
Magento 2.4.7 April 2024 May 2027
Magento 2.4.6 March 2023 August 11, 2026
Magento 2.4.5 August 2022 Ended August 2025

Adobe offers an additional year of extended support beyond those dates. That year is available to Adobe Commerce customers only. It does not cover the Magento Open Source codebase.

That gap is the practical consequence of the edition you chose. On Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 you have a fallback year. On Open Source 2.4.6 your security patches stop, and nothing follows them. There is also no Magento 3 coming, so the upgrade path runs along the 2.4 line rather than waiting for a rewrite.

If you do not know which version and edition you are running, that is the first thing we check, and it takes us under a day.

Accountability in Action

Interim President, Frontier Justice

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you and your team for everything you are doing to get us up and running and to fix the ongoing issues with our website. I can’t express how much it means to our team to have website support that is as competent, attentive to detail, and prepared as Smart Solutions has been.

Tony Zadnik

EVP, eCommerce, AdaptHealth

The team at Smart Solutions has been a valuable and consistent partner, serving as an extension of our internal team. From our initial meeting, it was evident how invested and focused the team was in personalizing our experience.

Justin Konesy

President, Brass Sales

Things are going well, we are working through some items, and we are getting ready to roll. It is a slow process, and it has opened our eyes to many issues we had with our database. Once those are cleaned up and we have a solid process and method in place, it will be a relief. Your team has really hit the nail on the head and gets things done quickly. We had an issue, and they jumped right in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Magento did not go away, it got renamed and split. Adobe acquired Magento in 2018; the licensed edition became Adobe Commerce, and Magento Open Source continues as the free, self-hosted edition. Adobe shipped 2.4.9 in May 2026 with support running to May 2029, and has confirmed there is no Magento 3. The reason the question keeps coming up is that "Magento" is still how merchants and buyers talk about the platform even though Adobe's branding moved on. What has genuinely changed is the support timeline, which is the thing worth checking. See the next answer.

Standard support for 2.4.6 ends August 11, 2026, and extended support for 2.4.5 ended August 12, 2026. 2.4.7 runs to May 2027, 2.4.8 to May 2028, and 2.4.9, the current release, to May 2029. The catch that trips up Open Source merchants is that Adobe's extra year of extended support is offered to Adobe Commerce customers only. It does not cover the Magento Open Source code base. So if you are on Open Source 2.4.6, your security patches stop and there is no fallback year behind them. If you are unsure which version and edition you are running, that is the first thing we check.

Yes, and a good share of our Magento work starts this way. Inheriting a build is a different job from starting one: before touching anything we audit what is actually running, which extensions conflict, what has been patched, what was customised in the core, and what will break at the next upgrade. Then we stabilise first and improve second. Adam Hirsch at Schreck Wholesale put it plainly after we took over three Magento sites for them: we "helped untangle the mess left by our first developers." Bring us the login and the repository, and we will tell you what you have before we tell you what it costs.

Usually yes. Most Magento performance problems are fixable in the installation you already have. The recurring causes are too many third-party extensions competing with each other, database queries that degrade as order and product data grow, frontend asset bloat, and full-page caching or Varnish that was never configured correctly. Replatforming is an expensive way to fix a caching problem. We profile the actual bottleneck first, then work on indexing, caching and database performance directly, and we tell you honestly if the build is far enough gone that rebuilding is the cheaper path.

Published market rates for Magento development run roughly $50 to $200 per hour, with project minimums commonly starting around $10,000 to $25,000, and the spread is mostly about where the work is done and how senior the team is. What actually moves your number is integration count, catalog complexity and how much of the core has already been customised, since inherited customisation makes every future upgrade more expensive. Magento Open Source has no licence fee, but hosting, security patching and engineering capacity are real recurring costs that belong in the comparison against a licensed platform.

Yes, and the platform-specific part is most of the value. Magento generates URLs in ways that quietly damage search performance: layered navigation creates a filter combination for every facet, which produces large volumes of near-duplicate URLs; URL rewrites accumulate through catalog changes; and multi-store views multiply everything. Left alone, Google spends its crawl budget on filter permutations instead of the category and product pages you want ranked. The fixes are structural rather than editorial. We handle indexation control, URL rewrite hygiene, category and product optimization, and protecting organic traffic through upgrades and migrations.
